The Town

Located next to the River Wear is the historic market town of Chester-le-Street. Steeped in history, the town has evolved over the centuries into a popular residential area with transport links that date back to Roman times. The area flourished with its great transport and trade links and evidence of this prosperity is still left behind in nearby historical buildings such as Lumley Castle, The Hermitage and St. Mary’s Church which dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and once housed the body of St. Cuthbert.

As with all prospering towns, the areas surrounding began to grow. Chester-le-Street is surrounded by small villages and hamlets. The village of Waldridge is walking distance from the town centre and boasts spectacular view from one of the largest lowland heaths in County Durham. Lumley is located two minutes away by car and has a renowned 18 hole golf course with views of Lumley Castle.

The Riverside Park is also a significant part of the town’s history. It has beautiful walks alongside the River Wear, play parks for children, a bowls green and also leads on to the renowned Durham County Cricket Ground which hosts county and international cricket and also high profile concert performers such as Elton John, Diana Ross and Tom Jones.

Like a majority of the North-East, coal mining played a big part in the history of the local area and the colliery villages such as Pelton, Pelton Fell, Waldridge Village and Sacriston. These villages have local shops, amenities and schools which also attract those who are looking for a more semi-suburban setting.
